How Many Chiropractic Visits Will I Need?

One of the first questions almost every new patient asks is:

“How many chiropractic visits am I going to need?”

And honestly… it’s a fair question.

No one wants to commit to months of care if they don’t have to. You want to know how long it will take to feel better and get back to doing the things you enjoy.

The answer is: it depends—but not for the reason you might think.

Think about it this way. If two people break a bone, they don’t necessarily heal at the same speed. One person may be young, healthy, and have a simple fracture. Another may be older, have osteoporosis, or a more severe injury.

Even though the diagnosis is similar, i.e. Broke bone, their treatment plans look very different.

The same idea applies to chiropractic care. When someone comes into our office, we look at several important factors.  Here are just a few: How long have you had the problem? How severe is the condition? Is this your first episode, or has it been recurring for years? What kind of wear and tear do you put on your body everyday?  Are there signs of arthritis or spinal degeneration?  Have there been any other traumas? What do your X-rays show? What are your goals, both short term and long term? Just that short list can hold a lot of important information.

Someone with a sore back from gardening over the weekend may recover in just a few visits. Someone who’s spent ten years sitting at a desk, has poor posture, recurring neck pain, and disc degeneration will naturally require more care.

Now let’s be clear, It’s not because chiropractic “takes forever.” It’s because your body needs time to heal and adapt. Think like exercising. You are not going to get into shape with one trip to the gym. Or think about your teeth. They are not going to be healthy by brushing them once. These seem like simple or silly analogies but the same premise holds true for the spine and nervous system.

Another thing to understand is that feeling better isn’t always the same as being better.  Pain is often the last thing to appear and the first thing to disappear. Many people start feeling relief within the first few visits. That’s great—but it doesn’t necessarily mean the underlying problem has been corrected. Imagine spraining your ankle.  After a week or two, it may not hurt anymore, but if the ligaments haven’t fully healed and your balance hasn’t returned, you’re much more likely to sprain it again.

Your spine works the same way.  Our goal isn’t just to help you feel better temporarily. We want to help your spine move better, reduce stress on the joints, and improve your overall function so the problem is less likely to keep coming back.

Let’s talk about care a bit. Most patients go through three phases of care. The first phase is pain relief, where we’re focused on reducing your symptoms and helping you become more comfortable. The second phase is corrective or rehabilitative care, where we’re working on improving spinal function and addressing the underlying mechanical issues that contributed to the problem in the first place. The third phase is maintenance or wellness care. Many patients choose to come in regularly once phase 1/2 are complete because they feel better and they function better, just like people who exercise regularly, visit the dentist for cleanings, or service their car before problems develop.

So, how many chiropractic visits will you need?

The honest answer is that no ethical chiropractor should give you a number before they’ve actually evaluated you. The right treatment plan should be based on your condition, your health, your goals, and how your body responds to care—not on a one-size-fits-all schedule.

If you’re dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, or sciatica and you’ve been wondering whether chiropractic care could help, the first step is getting a proper evaluation. That way, you’ll know exactly what’s going on and what your options are.
